The Citation for the DCM reads: " For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty on the morning of 13th May 1917 during an enemy raid on our front line trenches in the Ypres sector. At great personal risk and with utter contempt for danger he did everything possible tpo prepare his company to repel attack. Throughout an exceedingly heavy bombardment he constantly visited the whole of his comapny front, many times having to crawl over large blocks made by the enemy bombardment. His example and work were largely responsible for the complete state of readiness with which the enemy raid was received and repulsed. This W.O. has been previously recommended for his great courage, initiative, and example"
