"For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He rendered invaluable assistance throughout, and was largely responsible for repelling a hostile raiding party in the Hill 60 sector in May 1917."
"For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty on the morning of the 13th May 1917 during an enemy raid on our front line trenches in the Ypres salient. At greaty personal risk and with utter contempt for danger he did everything possible to prepare his company to repel an attack. Throughout an exceedingly heavy bombardment he constantly visited the whole of his Company front, many times having to crawl over large blocks made by the enemy bombardment. His example and work were largely responsible for the complete state of readiness with which the enemy raid was received and repulsed. This WO has been previously recommended for his great courage, initiative and example." CSM. 3/11324 14. 7.17 13Bn. Croix de Guerre (French)
"On October 7th 1916, at Le Saars, for his conspicuous gallantry and reasons as follows:- This CSM was of the utmost value in controlling the Company after his Company Commander was wounded and evacuated. With absolute disregard of heavy enemy shelling he supervised the digging of a line of strong points beyond the village Le Saars, was captured whilst moving from one strong point to another, he discovered two Germans in a shell-hole, and although alone and armed only with a pick he disarmed and took both men prisoner."
