Born in Ireland, he was living in Chester-le-Street when he enlisted in 8 DLI in 1914. He was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal in early 1916 when, as a Sergeant, he "set a fine example of bravery, skill and devotion in leading his party across three hundred yards of open ground under heavy shell and rifle fire". Arthur Rutter was killed in action on 18 September 1916 during an attack on Prue Trench, near High Wood, Battle of the Somme. He was 25 years old and is buried in Adanac Military Cemetery, Miraumont.
