"For conspicuous gallantry. A small party of another regiment was isolated in an advance trench. Several attempts had been made to reinforce this party, but they had been driven back with heavy loss. On a fresh attempt being made, Serjeant Rutter set a fine example of bravery, skill and devotion in leading his party across three hundred yards of open ground under heavy shell and rifle fire, and the attempt was successful."
