Biography

Born in Durham City, he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant and joined 15 DLI in 1917. He fought at Passchendaele and gained the Military Cross in October 1917 for gallantry near Polygon Wood, when, though "twice buried by shells and badly shaken", he continued to lead his men and pushed forward to capture two German positions. He was invalided home in 1918. In 1920, he joined 8 DLI and took command of the company at Gilesgate. In 1940, Major Raine was badly wounded during an air attack on 8 DLI at Givenchy, France, and did not see active service again. He retired as a Lieutenant Colonel. A bank manager in civilian life, John Raine died in 1966, aged 72 years.
