Near Polygon Wood October 1917. "For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. Though twice buried by shells and badly shaken, he continued to move about among his men, directing the consolidation. Subsequently, on going forward, he mopped up two strong points. His coolness and cheerfulness under heavy fire inspired his men with confidence."
