Henry Harpur Greer

Born in 1821 in Ireland, he was commissioned as an Ensign in the 68th Light Infantry in 1841. He served for 23 years in the 68 LI before he first saw action in New Zealand in 1864. As Lieutenant Colonel, he commanded the 68 LI at the Battle of Gate Pah in April 1864 and he was commander of the entire British force at the Battle of Te Ranga on 21 June 1864, when a force of 600 Maori soldiers was routed, with 151 being killed, wounded or captured. For this action he was made a Companion of the Order of the Bath.

He retired from the 68 LI in 1869 to command a Depot in Ireland and finally retired from the Army in 1881with the rank of Lieutenant General.

Henry Greer died in 1886.
