From Seaham Harbour, he served with the 12th Battalion DLI during the Great War and fought on both the Western Front and in Italy. In September 1917, Corporal Defty won the Military Medal for his bravery during the 3rd Battle of Ypres. In October 1918, Robert Defty won the Bar to his MM in Italy for displaying "the highest courage" when 12 DLI took part in the crossing of River Piave and the final advance that brought about the surrender of Austria.
