Joint citation with Sergeant Joseph Clasper - "For gallantry and devotion to duty during the operations on the Green Line September 1917. A report was received that the enemy were counter attacking our line. These two NCO's, under the most intense shell fire, organised a Lewis gun section, and having reconnoitered the ground in front, put the gun into the most advantageous position. The troops on the right were retiring, and our position was being extremely heavily shelled. They continually exposed themselves whilst watching for the counter attack. By their example of coolness and disregard of danger, they inspired confidence in all ranks.

From beginning to end he set a glorious example to all ranks.
