Biography

Born in 1898 in Bishop Auckland he enlisted in the 6th Battalion DLI in February 1915. He was awarded the Military Medal for his bravery during the attack on the Butte de Warlencourt on 5 November 1916 when, as a Lewis Gunner, "he showed a splendid example of coolness and courage to his men and rendered invaluable assistance to his officer in very trying circumstances."

Sergeant Cruddace was awarded the Bar to his Military Medal in 1918 and was discharged from the 18th Battalion DLI in January 1919.

During WW2, he served in the Durham Home Guard and his photograph shows him in his Home Guard battledress uniform.

Harry Cruddace wrote an account of his part in the attack on the Butte de Warlencourt in November 1916, a copy of which is held in the DLI Museum.
