Military Medal (London Gazette 22.1.1917) as Lance Corporal, 6th Battalion DLI.

"After the attack on the morning of the 5th November had been held up, he collected his two Lewis Guns (he was N.C.O. in charge of the detachment) and established them in a strong point about 50 yards from the German trench and succeeded in keeping down the German snipers in the opposite trench to a very great extent. He showed a splendid example of coolness and courage to his men and rendered invaluable assistance to his officer in trying circumstances. Later he succeeded in bringing both his guns out of action."
