From Darlington, he trained as a teacher at Bede College before he enlisted in the DLI and fought at Ypres in 1915 as a Lewis Gunner. In May 1917, he was commissioned as a Temporary Second Lieutenant and joined the 13th Battalion DLI, serving in Italy, where he was twice wounded. He was awarded the Military Cross for his bravery in October 1918, just a few weeks before the end of the Great War. After the war, William Bannerman returned to teaching.
