Biography

A colliery mason from Shield Row, near Stanley, County Durham, he served as a Sergeant with the 12th (Service) Battalion DLI during the Great War. He was killed in action on 20 September 1917 during the 3rd Battle of Ypres, when 12 DLI supported an attack by the 23rd Division near Dumbarton Lakes by carrying up stores and ammunition. He was 26 years old. William Dixon is buried in Ypres Reservoir Cemetery.
