Awarded the Military Cross (London Gazette 19 November 1917) as Temporary Second Lieutenant, 13th (Service) Battalion DLI.
"For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He led his platoon through a heavy barrage to reinforce the front line during an enemy counter-attack. He repelled the counter-attack and dug new trenches in front of the old line, which had been badly damaged by shell fire. He showed great coolness and courage in exceptionally difficult circumstances."
