Born at Dunston on Tyne in 1871, John Sloan served, as a Regular soldier, with the 2nd Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers during the Boer War and was severely wounded in 1902. After his discharge to the Reserve, he joined 3 DLI at Fenham Barracks, Newcastle. He was "recalled to the Colours" in August 1914 and fought with 2 DLI in France during the Great War. John Sloan died at Gateshead in 1947. His photograph is copied from a hand-coloured original.
