Born in West Hartlepool in 1908, Roy Armstrong enlisted as a Regular soldier in the DLI in 1926 and served for almost 28 years before he retired as the Regimental Sergeant Major of the 8th Battalion DLI in Durham City. During his long years with the Regiment, he served in Egypt, China, Africa and at home. He finally retired from the Army in 1954 and settled in Nottingham. Roy Armstrong died in October 1992.
