Commissioned in the 6th (Territorial) Battalion DLI before the Great War, he went with this battalion to Belgium in April 1915 and was wounded at Ypres. After recovering, he returned to the Western Front and rose to command 6 DLI as a Lieutenant Colonel in April 1918. In October 1918, when 6 DLI was reduced to a training unit after very heavy casualties, Colonel Walton was given command of the 18th (Pals) Battalion DLI. He was awarded the Military Cross in 1918. After the War, he was a member of the Durham TA Association and was a Sector Commander of the Home Guard during the Second World War. His only son was killed in action in 1943 in Sicily with 6 DLI. Frederick Walton died in 1969 at Witton-le-Wear, aged 78 years.
