Born in 1822, in Barnes, Surrey, he enlisted as a Private in the 68 Light Infantry in 1848. He served in the Regiment for nearly 22 years, including 14 years overseas, and rose to be Sergeant Major. He fought in the Crimea and in New Zealand and gained the Distinguished Conduct Medal at the battle at Te Ranga, 21 June 1864, for his bravery in hand-to-hand fighting with the Maoris. He was discharged in 1870 and appointed a Yeoman of the Queen's Bodyguard. He was made an Usher in 1898. John Tudor, who was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal in 1907, died in London in 1911, aged 85 years.
