Lance Corporal Steele of 2 DLI fought in the Boer War with the Burma Mounted Infantry. He was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal for assisting in the rescue, under very heavy fire, of four guns of "Q" Battery, Royal Horse Artillery, at Sanna's Post near Bloemfontein on 31 March 1900. In this action, five Victoria Crosses were won. No other records for this soldier have survived.
