Born in 1889, he served in the Militia Artillery in Yorkshire from 1907-10. In 1914, he joined the 9th (Territorial Force) Battalion DLI and later moved to the 6th Battalion DLI. As Acting Regimental Sergeant Major, he was awarded the Military Cross in 1917 and he gained the Bar in March/April 1918 during the German advance at Le Mesnel and later on the River Lys, when he assumed command of a company after all the officers had fallen. Thomas Sordy, whose home was in Gateshead, was also awarded the French Croix de Guerre during the Great War.
