Biography

Born in Willington, he joined the 2 Volunteer Battalion DLI in 1898, moving to 6 DLI in 1908, when the Territorial Force was created. During the Great War, he served with 15 DLI as a Company Quartermaster Sergeant and fought at Loos and on the Somme. He was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal for his actions at Flers on 16 September 1916. He was severely wounded in 1917. After the War, when the Territorials were reformed, he rejoined "D" Company 6 DLI at Crook and served until 1933. Addison Small died in 1974, aged 94 years.
