Joseph Shields

Born in Chester-le-Street, he was a tinsmith before he enlisted in the 68 Regiment, as a Private, in January 1808. He was shot through both legs during the siege of Flushing in August 1809 and was wounded in the right thigh at the battle of Vittoria on 21 June 1813. Joseph Shields was discharged, aged 35 years, from the 68 Regiment at Quebec in August 1825, suffering from chronic catarrh.
