Born in Great Eastern, he was a labourer before he enlisted as a Private in the 68 LI in 1849, aged 19 years. He fought in the Crimea and was slightly wounded at Inkerman on 5 November 1854. On 11 May 1855, over 2000 Russians attacked the trenches held by the 68 LI outside Sebastopol. Charles Ross fought bravely in this action though wounded and was awarded the French Medaille Militaire. He was discharged in 1860 after 21 years service.
