He joined 5 DLI before the Great War and went, as Regimental Quartermaster Sergeant, with 5 DLI to Belgium in 1915. In early 1916, he was promoted to Quartermaster and served on the Western Front until ill health forced him to return home in March 1918. When the Territorial Army was re-established in 1920, James Robinson rejoined 5 DLI as Captain & Quartermaster. He was made a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in 1924 for his long service with 5 DLI. James Robinson commanded the Thornaby Home Guard during the Second World War. He died in 1948, aged 71 years.
