Born in Ireland, he joined the 62 Foot in 1850, aged 18 years, moving to the 68 LI in 1854. He fought in the Crimea and was personally presented with his medal by Queen Victoria at Horse Guards on 18 May 1855. He then deserted, only to join the East India Company and fight in the Mutiny. He finally returned to the 68 LI in 1864 and, after prison, served in New Zealand. Patrick Reed was discharged in 1876.
