Born in Dingle, County Kerry, he was a labourer before he enlisted in the 68 Regiment in August 1808. He was wounded in the left leg by a shell burst at the siege of Flushing in 1809 and at Vittoria, on 21 June 1813, when a musket ball went through him from right knee to groin. After his recovery, he served until 1819, when he was invalided home from Quebec. Thomas Quinlan then served with the 5 Royal Veteran Battalion until he was discharged, aged 38 years, in June 1821, when this battalion was disbanded.
