George Porter

Born in Alnwick, Northumberland, he was a grocer before he enlisted in the DLI in 1881, aged 20 years. He had served in the Northumberland Artillery Militia before he enlisted. He fought with 2 DLI in Egypt and was rapidly promoted to Sergeant. He was discharged, suffering from epilepsy, in 1888 and was invalided home from India.
