Charles Edward Stuart Phillips

Born in 1897, he enlisted as a Bugler in 2 DLI at Colchester in 1911. He was too young to go out to France with 2 DLI in September 1914, but later joined his battalion. He was awarded the Military Medal for bravery during the battle of the Somme and, in 1917, was Commissioned in the Field as a Second Lieutenant. He joined 12 DLI and was badly wounded when his left arm was shattered by a bullet. After the War, he rejoined 2 DLI and served in India on the North West Frontier in 1930. He retired in 1935, but served during the Second World War, as a Major, with the Royal Pioneer Corps. Charles Phillips died at Salisbury in 1963, aged 65 years.
