Born in Dublin, he was a labourer before he enlisted in the DLI in 1895, aged 19 years. He served in South Africa with 1 DLI and the 26 Mounted Infantry, and was awarded the DCM in 1902. He joined the Army Reserve in 1903, as a Corporal, and was discharged in 1912. He settled in London and worked as a railway signalman.
