Biography

Born in Nottingham, he was a hosier before he joined the Nottingham Militia in November 1807. In May 1812, he volunteered for the 68 Regiment and went to the Peninsula. He was shot in the left thigh at Vittoria on 21 June 1813 and in the stomach at Orthes on 27 February 1814, though, for some reason, he did not get the "Orthes" bar. In 1815, he joined the 1 Royal Regiment of Veterans at Plymouth. Thomas Newman was discharged in June 1816, aged 27 years.
