John Meara
Biography | Medals | GlossaryBiography
Born at Birr in Ireland, he joined the 68 LI in 1852, aged 18 years. His records show that he was a thief and a drunkard, but in battle his conduct improved and in the Crimea in September 1855 he was recommended for the Victoria Cross for voluntarily doing sentry duty during a heavy bombardment. John Meara was discharged in 1872.
