Born in Ireland, he enlisted in the Donegal Militia in January 1807, before volunteering for the 68 Regiment in May 1809. He served as a Private in the Peninsular War, but only fought at Vittoria in June 1813, as he appears to have been frequently ill whilst in Spain. Patrick Mcgowan was discharged in May 1816.
