Donald McBean
Biography | Medals | GlossaryBiography
Born in Sunderland, he described himself as a "musician" when he enlisted in the DLI in 1886, aged 15 years. He served for 21 years with both 1 and 2 DLI and for 19 years was a bandsman. He served in South Africa with 1 DLI, though probably not very effectively as in 1906 it is recorded that he had his pay reduced for "musketry ineffiency". He was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal in 1906 and was discharged in 1907. Donald McBean died in Sunderland in 1951.
