Biography | Medals | GlossaryBiography
Born in Mallow, Ireland, he joined the 68 LI in 1840, aged 21 years. He spent most of his time in prison for drunkenness and stealing but on 11 May 1855, during a Russian attack, he acted with great bravery despite being wounded in the hip and was awarded the Sardinian Medal for Valour. A few months later, he received 50 lashes for drunkenness. James Magner was discharged "unfit for further service" in 1857 and returned to Ireland.
