Born in Grimsby, he was a clerk before he enlisted in the 68 Regiment in 1847, aged 18. He gained the Distinguished Conduct Medal in 1854, after Inkerman. In 1868, he took his discharge, as a Colour Sergeant, and became a Sergeant Instructor of the 2 Middlesex Rifle Volunteers. He was appointed a Yeoman of the Queen's Bodyguard in 1878. Samuel Lucas died in 1885.
