He was born in Rugby in 1820, but did not enlist in the 68 Light Infantry until June 1854. He went to the Crimea the same year and fought in all the main actions and was slightly wounded on several occasions. He served with the 68 LI in Burma, New Zealand and India, during his 21 years in the Army, rising to rank of Sergeant in New Zealand. He was discharged in 1875 with the Long Service and Good Conduct Medal. In 1905, he was awarded, with a gratuity of £10, the Meritorious Service Medal. Henry Lee died in Barnard Castle in 1913, aged 93 years, and is buried in the Parish Churchyard.
