He was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in 7 DLI in 1910. During the Great War, he served with 7 DLI and the Royal Flying Corps as a pilot. When the Territorial Army was reformed after the Great War, he rejoined 7 DLI and rose to command this battalion from 1929 to 1933. During the Second World War, Colonel Laing commanded the 9 Durham (Sunderland) Battalion Home Guard. Leonard Laing died at Sunderland in 1954, aged 61.
