Biography

Born in 1772, he was commissioned as an Ensign in the 18th Foot in 1791 and fought at Toulon. In 1795, he joined the Corsican Regiment and took part in the capture of Bastia and Calvi, where he was wounded. In 1800, he became a Major (by purchase) in the 68th Foot and fought in the West Indies.

In 1809, he was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel and given command of the newly formed 68th Light Infantry, taking it to Walcheren and then to the Peninsula. He was badly wounded at the Battle of Vittoria on 21 June 1813, when he was hit by two musket balls.

After the Napoleonic Wars, he rose to the rank of Lieutenant General and was appointed Colonel of the 68th Light Infantry in 1838.

William Johnston died at Southampton in 1844.
