Biography

Born in London, he was a shoe maker before he joined the 68 LI in 1858, aged 28 years. He served for 18 years, including the New Zealand War, before he was discharged in 1876 as "unfit for further service" as a result of syphilis, which he had caught in Burma in 1863.
