Born in Salford, he was a carder before he enlisted in the East India Company's infantry in 1841, aged 18 years. He was posted to the 2 Bombay European LI and fought in Persia and the Indian Mutiny. He was discharged in May 1860 with a pension of 1 shilling a day.
