He enlisted as a Private in the 7th Battalion DLI at Sunderland in 1914 before he was commissioned in The Northumberland Fusiliers in 1915 and saw action on the Western Front. He also served in Ireland in 1919 with The Royal Sussex Regiment.
He rejoined 7 DLI at Sunderland, as a company commander, when the Territorials reformed in 1920 and took command, as Lieutenant Colonel, in 1933. He oversaw the transformation in 1936 of 7 DLI to an Anti-Aircraft unit - the 47th (The DLI) Anti-Aircraft Battalion Royal Engineers - before finally retiring in 1937.
He received the Efficiency Decoration with the "Territorial" bar (TD) in 1936, as is shown in his photograph.
