Born in Barrow in Furness in 1871, he later moved to Stockton and joined 1 Volunteer Battalion DLI. He served in the 4 Volunteer Service Company in the Boer War from 1901-02. This Company was attached to 2 Northumberland Fusiliers in South Africa. In 1908, he joined the newly formed 5 DLI and served with 5 DLI and also No:208 Prisoner of War Escort Company during the Great War, rising to the rank of Sergeant. He was awarded the Territorial Force Efficiency Medal. William Hastings died in 1952.
