Biography

Born in Market Drayton, Shropshire, he was a labourer before he enlisted in the 68 Light Infantry in 1842, aged 17 years. He fought in the Crimean War and, as a Corporal, was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal for his part in driving back the Russian sortie from Sebastopol on 12 January 1855. He was promoted to Sergeant in March 1855 but in July was tried by court martial for an unrecorded crime and reduced to Private. Joseph Dutton took his discharge in 1863 after 21 years service.
