He ran away from home and enlisted, under age, in 2 DLI. Private Drew fought in the Egyptian Campaign, 1885-6, with Lieutenant de Lisle's Mounted Infantry. Private Drew was one of the 56 men of 2 DLI to die of disease during the campaign. His name is recorded on the Memorial Brass in Durham Cathedral.
