Born near Cork, he was a labourer before he enlisted in the East India Company's infantry in 1847 for unlimited service, aged 23 years. He joined the 2 Bombay European LI in India in 1848 and fought in Persia. In 1861, he volunteered for the 106 Light Infantry and, in 1866, he was discharged, as unfit for further service, and returned home to Ireland.
