He joined the 1st Battalion DLI as a Bugler in 1888 and rose to be appointed a Permanent Staff Sergeant with the 4th (Militia) Battalion DLI at Fenham Barracks, Newcastle upon Tyne. He served in South Africa with 4 DLI in 1902. After his discharge, he became the Market Superintendent at Newcastle. Charles Donnelly died in 1948.
