Born in Bandon, Ireland, he was a tailor before he enlisted in the 36 Regiment in 1842, aged 16 years. He transferred to the 68 Light Infantry in 1844 and served in the Crimea and New Zealand, as a Sergeant. He was awarded the Long Service & Good Conduct Medal. Daniel Cronin was discharged in 1866, "worn out" after 22 years service in the Army including 14 years overseas, and retired to Bedford.
