John Anthony Cowen

Born in 1831, he enlisted in 9 (Blaydon) Rifle Volunteers in 1861 and rose to command 5 Volunteer Battalion DLI from 1876 to 1895. He was awarded the Volunteer Decoration in 1893. He died in 1895, having been 34 years in the Durham Rifle Volunteers.
