Born in Stafford, he was a labourer before he joined the 68 LI in 1853, aged 17 years. He fought in the Crimea and was wounded at Inkerman. In 1857, he deserted but was caught in 1862, branded and imprisoned. In 1863, he joined the 2/19 Regiment and was finally discharged in 1877, aged 41.
