Born at Ryde, Isle of Wight, he was a servant before he enlisted in the East India Company's infantry for unlimited service in 1840, aged 26 years. He was posted to the 2 Bombay European LI in India in 1841 and fought in Persia and the Indian Mutiny. He was discharged in 1860, after 20 years service, with a pension of 1 shilling a day.
